Event Description
Presented as part of the International Focus Series,* Robert Adanto's Pearls on the Ocean Floor is a thought-provoking, feature-length documentary examining the lives and works of Iranian female artists living and working in and outside the Islamic Republic. This unflinching and incisive study presents unique individual perspectives regarding issues of identity, gender, and the role that art plays in challenging the traditional stereotypes often associated with women in Iran. (2010, 77 minutes)

A panel discussion will follow the screening with Director Robert Adanto; SMA Curator of Global Contemporary & Asian Art Kris Ercums; KU Assistant Professor of Installation Art Maria Velasco; and Pooya Naderi, an Iran native and doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology.

*The International Focus Series is presented by the KU Center for Global & International Studies in collaboration with various KU Departments and Area Studies Centers within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This is an ongoing series of arts-related events-from the visual to performing arts and literature-with global and international scope. The theme for this Academic Year is “Nations & Identities.” The 2011-2012 series is exploring the idea of Art & Artists as an extension or expression of this theme.
