Event Description
In celebration of composer Franz Liszt's birth, the KU School of Music is presenting the Liszt Commemorative Bicentennial Celebration from September 11 thru September 13, 2011. Entitled "A Liszt Odyssey," the international conference shapes up as one of the most prestigious events honoring Liszt and his music.

The Liszt Collaborative Concert brings together stellar musicians and chamber groups to play and interpret some of Liszt's most important pieces; central to the performances will be the Spencer's famed C. Bechstein piano, which was made around 1885-1886 for Liszt's final tour.

This inaugural event will be followed by various masterclasses and lectures across the next two days. Distinguished musicologist, Alan Walker, the premier scholar on Franz Liszt, will lecture on Franz Liszt the man, composer, and his music. Massimilano Baggio, of Conservatorio di Musica "G. Verdi" Milano, will provide piano masterclasses and lecture on various styles and compositions by Liszt. A composition masterclass will be hosted by Mohammed Fairouz, a renowned young composer who has created some of the most compelling new pieces of music in years. The celebration will be concluded by a Liszt Commemorative Concert by KU's Steven Spooner, associate professor of piano, on the evening of September 13, 2011 at 7:30 at the Lied Center.
