Event Description
Keeping in the background the great example of the Renaissance mystic poet Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591), this talk develops an informal discussion of two different and sometimes contrasting practices: the intellectual as well as existential practice of poetry in the aesthetic life, and the existential as well as intellectual practice of mysticism in the spiritual life. Attention is also payed to some contemporary developments, especially in Italian poetry. Paolo Valesio, creative writer, essayist and literary critic, is Giuseppe Ungaretti Professor Emeritus in Italian Literature at Columbia University. He previously studied and taught at the University of Bologna, Harvard University, New York University and (for a quarter century) at Yale University.
