Event Description
Set in 1939, Destination: Planet Negro (2013) traces a group of African American leaders who devise an ingenious and unlikely response to Jim Crow segregation—build a rocket and colonize Mars. The crew blasts off, but time travels instead, arriving in present-day America. Their adventure illuminates hard truths about American culture, and threatens to undermine the timeline of history along the way. Director Kevin Willmott introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Presented in conjunction with the exhibitions And Still We Rise and Narratives of the Soul. Running time: 1 hr. 38 min. Not rated.
