These maps from Ernest Shackleton’s (1874-1922) Nimrod expedition (also see the nearby South Journey Party map) represent the first exploration of Antarctica conducted on foot shown in this exhibition. Like his predecessor and sometimes competitor, Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), Shackleton conducted extensive exploration of Antarctica. The design of these maps is similar to those from Ross’s expeditions. In all cases, the viewer receives a narrowly focused quantity
of information, specific only to what the explorers were able to determine firsthand.
