“Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle
Canadian ice-hockey player Wayne Gretzky ranks among the best players in the history of the NHL (National Hockey League). He is one of several prominent athlete celebrities portrayed by Warhol. Following the Polaroid session at Warhol’s studio, one example of which is seen here, Warhol produced several portraits of Gretzky and then shared the stage with the star athlete to unveil the portraits in December 1983. Now retired from playing the sport, Gretzky has written books and has an eponymous restaurant in Toronto.
