Popular calendar imagery was not always marked with numbers and the days of the week. A type of Dutch art collected in the seventeenth century featured a series of images that depicted activities appropriate for each month or season of the year, as seen in The Months and the nearby Four Times of Year by Matthew Merian. Some activities relate to agricultural labor and others are for sheer enjoyment, showing that life can have a balance of work and play all year long.
