Event Description
Celebrate pioneering African American artists with Kansas roots with an evening of live jazz and film in Pachamama’s Blue Room, inspired by the nearby Pollinators mural by Lawrence artist Dave Loewenstein. Come to hear Eddie Moore and The Outer Circle, stay to see The Learning Tree written and directed by Gordon Parks. Enjoy food and libations from Pachamama’s bar menu throughout the evening. Dave Loewenstein also shares remarks about the mural and its subjects: Aaron Douglas, Coleman Hawkins, Langston Hughes, Gordon Parks, Hattie McDaniel, Oscar Micheaux, and Gwendolyn Books. Saturated with color, The Outer Circle’s blend of jazz flows and swells with modern influences and those of tradition. Released last year to critical acclaim, their first EP is titled The Freedom of Expression. Set in rural Kansas in the late 1920s, The Learning Tree is a semi-autobiographical story about a year in the life of a black teenager and the chain of events that challenge his quiet confidence, forcing him into manhood. Music at 5:00 PM. Film at 7:00 PM. Admission is free. Seating is first come, first served.
